Fluid Dynamic Vibration Absorber for Slender Structures

Slender structures such as high-rise buildings, towers
and masts are built ever lighter and taller. Under wind
and seismic loads they sway noticeably, which impairs
comfort and serviceability and accelerates fatigue.
Today this is countered with tuned mass dampers: solid
masses of several tonnes that must be lifted to the top
of the building, permanently occupy valuable space
there and act in one direction of motion only.

Optionale Headline

We have developed a vibration absorber whose damping
mass is a liquid rather than a solid block. The liquid sits
in a narrow annular gap between the load-bearing wall
and an enclosing shell, held by elastic elements. When
the structure sways, the liquid is forced through this
gap, and the resulting hydraulic transmission lets a
small amount of liquid act like a far heavier mass. The
absorber is tuned through the stiffness of the elastic
elements, the dimensions of the gap and the damping.
As the liquid is simply pumped into place, it can also be
positioned at mid-height or near the ground.
