A recent investigation by the Startup Association on new establishments in 2023 reveals that Darmstadt has established itself as an outstanding location for start-ups, securing the third position in Germany. Berlin and Munich lead the list, with both cities experiencing a slight decline in start-up formations. The statistics are based on the number of start-ups per 100,000 inhabitants.
Of particular note is the strength of research-oriented start-up locations, including Darmstadt. The active and well-connected innovation ecosystem, comprised of TUDa, significantly contributes to this success. “We plan to further tap into existing potentials and strengthen Darmstadt as a hub for start-ups. With a formation rate of 12.3% per 100,000 inhabitants, Darmstadt closely trails behind Berlin (12.5%) and Munich (12.4%). The city is thus considered an innovation powerhouse in the region,” emphasizes Harald Holzer, Managing Director of HIGHEST.
The study also indicates that regional hotspots for start-ups are gaining importance, while major centers are losing traction due to high living costs and infrastructure challenges.
