Precious metal free Fuel Cell Catalyst
Hydrogen based fuel cells offer an attractive opportunity for a future CO2-free energy supply as converters. In fuel cells, catalysts are needed to facilitate the occurring chemical reactions. Despite the fact that the catalysts in comparison to other stack components are only needed in smaller weight proportions, they cause up to 40 % of the overall stack costs. This is because fuel cell catalysts are based on precious platin

Stack costs can significantly be reduced if the precious metal of the catalysts is replaced by a cheaper alternative. We developed a synthesis route for such a precious metal free cathode catalyst for the application in low temperature fuel cells. The catalyst is based on the cheap and earth abundant elements: iron, nitrogen and carbon. Our procedure relies on few and simple steps.
